Cricketers who announced their retirements in 2024

Ravichandran Ashwin

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect at the end of the 3rd Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. With 537 wickets, Ashwin finished his career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests. 

Tim Southee

Tim Southee retired from international cricket at the end of the New Zealand vs England test series in Hamilton. The New Zealand fast bowler finished with 391 Test wickets and he is the second-highest wicket taker for the Blackcaps ext only to Richard Hadlee’s 431. He is also the highest wicket-taker in international cricket for the Kiwis. 

James Anderson

England fast bowler James Anderson finished playing international cricket after the England v West Indies at the Lord’s. Anderson signed off as the most successful seamer in Test history with 704 scalps to his name.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

India’s iconic batting duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is following the team’s success at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. India beat South Africa in the final to lift its second T20 World Cup and the two batsmen retired from the format with immediate effect. Rohit and Kohli are India’s most successful T20i batters with 4231 runs and 4188 runs respectively. 

Ravindra Jadeja

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also followed the footsteps of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and he too retired from T20Is soon after India’s victory in the T20 World Cup. Jadeja represented India in 74 T20Is, picked 515 runs and claimed 54 wickets. 

David Warner

David Warned retired from cricket earlier this year. Warner’s final Test appearance was against Pakistan in Sydney in January and his last T20I was against India during the T20 World Cup. With 18995 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20is, Warner stands only behind Ricky Ponting as the Australian batter with most amount of runs in three formats combined. 

Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh’s iconic cricketer Shakib Al Hasan retired from T20Is and has played his final Test as well. In an statement by the legendary all-rounder he said that the T20 World Cup this year was his final  T20 assignment for Bangladesh. Shakib wished to play his final Test at home but that couldn’t happen. With 246 wickets in Tests and 149 wickets in T20Is, Shakib retired as his country’s highest-wicket taker in the two formats.
