Australia in command as Head and Smith hit hundreds

By Prakhar Sachdeo

Play resumed on the second day of the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane after most of the opening day was wiped out due to incessant rain. Jasprit Bumrah struck early in the first session as he removed Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney in quick succession.

Mohammed Siraj walked off the field for a while due to a strain but the fast bowler returned and carried on bowling.

Travis Head and Steve Smith struck a partnership to guide Australia to 104/3 at Lunch.

Travis Head and Steve Smith completed half-centuries in the second session as Australia’s total began to swell.

Travis Head though continued to torment Indian bowlers as he completed his second successive century. Australia were 324/3 at Tea.

Steve Smith also converted his half-century into a hundred as Australia continued to strengthen its grip on the match.

Jasprit Bumrah gave India some respite as he picked the wickets of the two centurions. Bumrah first removed Smith and then dismissed Head to complete a five-wicket haul. While Smith walked back after scoring 101, Head departed after hitting 152.

Alex Carey scored a brisk 45 as Australia finished the day of 405/7.
