Team India’s lows under head coach Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir’s run as the head coach of India’s men’s cricket team has seen several set backs. Gambhir took over the reins of India’s men’s cricket team as the head coach last year. He succeeded Rahul Dravid, who stepped down from the role after India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup. 

Under Gautam Gambhir India lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka for the first time since 1997.  It happed in 2024 when India lost a three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka. 

Under Gautam Gambhir India suffered its first home Test series loss in 12 years. It happened when New Zealand defeated India in a three-match Test series. New Zealand rubbed more salt on India’s wounds as they clinched the series 3-0 to hand India their first 3-0 whitewash at home.   

In Begaluru Test of the series against New Zealand India were bowled out on 46 in their first innings. It is the team’s lowest score at home and third-lowest overall.

During the Border-Gavaskar trophy, India lost the Boxing Day Test played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by 184 runs. It was for the first time in 12 years that India tasted defeat in the Boxing Day Test. 

The defeat in Melbourne was followed by a crushing 6-wicket loss at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It was India’s first Test loss at the iconic venue in 13 years. 

India had not lost a Border-Gavaskar series since 2017. But under Gambhir’s coaching, team lost a Border-Gavaskar series for the first time in seven years. It also let Australia recalim the Border-Gavaskar trophy after a gap of 10 years.  

India had featured in the first two finals of the ICC World Test Championship. However for the first time they have failed to qualify for a ICC World Test Championship final.
