With petrol above ₹100 a litre in most cities, small habits add up to real monthly savings. None of these need a workshop visit — just consistency.
Maintenance basics
- Check tyre pressure every couple of weeks. Under-inflated tyres can cut mileage by 3–5%.
- Don’t skip servicing. A clogged air filter or old engine oil quietly drops efficiency.
- Lose the dead weight and remove roof carriers when unused — extra load and drag burn fuel.
How you drive
- Accelerate gently and anticipate — hard acceleration and braking are the biggest fuel wasters.
- Stay in the right gear and keep revs low; use the highest comfortable gear.
- Cruise steady on highways (around 60–80 km/h is the efficiency sweet spot for most cars).
- Switch off at long halts — idling for more than a minute wastes more than restarting.
- Use AC sensibly in city traffic; at highway speeds, AC is usually better than open windows (less drag).
Plan before you go
- Combine trips so the engine runs warm and efficient.
- Pick the cheapest fuel nearby — prices vary city to city; check today’s petrol, diesel and CNG rates.
- Plan the route to avoid known jams and unnecessary tolls.
Know your numbers
The fastest way to see what you actually spend — and what a habit change saves — is to run the maths. Use our fuel cost calculator for your monthly and yearly spend, and if you drive a lot, compare it against a CNG or EV switch at current prices.
