Petrol sales rises 2.8% in September, diesel drops 2%

Petrol sales in India saw a 2.8% increase in September year-on-year, while diesel fell by 2%, indicating an oil demand slowdown. LPG sales rose by 1%. The growth rates for these fuels in September were lower than the April-August averages. Jet fuel sales jumped 9.5% driven by strong air traffic.
New Delhi: Petrol sales rose 2.8% year-on-year in September while diesel dropped 2%, signalling a slowdown in India's oil demand.
Liquefied petroleum gas ( LPG ), used mainly for cooking in the country, rose 1%, according to the oil ministry data.
In the April-August period, diesel sales rose 1% year-on-year, petrol 8% and LPG 7%. The September sales growth for these three most consumed refined fuels in the country has slipped below the April-August average.
Jet fuel sales increased 9.5% in September on the back of strong air traffic.
The compounded annual growth rate for jet fuel has been 2% since 2019.
It is 1.7% for diesel, 4.5% for LPG and 5.8% for petrol since 2019.
A slowdown in vehicle sales, rainfall and a switch to alternative fuels have contributed to weaker fuel consumption in September.
The company plans over 12 new launches, capacity expansion for scooters and EVs, and aims for electric scooters to contribute over 50 per cent of total scooter sales by 2030.
BIS has notified IS 19850:2026 for E22, E25, E27 and E30 ethanol-blended petrol, creating a fuel-quality framework beyond E20. The move does not mean instant E30 at pumps, but it is a clear signal for vehicle compatibility, fuel retailing and future petrol policy.
As fuel prices rise by over ₹7 per litre in 10 days, Indian consumers and the auto industry may face deeper inflation-led pressure on spending and mobility costs.
CAQM has issued Direction No. 100 with a phased EV-only path for new L5 three-wheelers in Delhi-NCR and approved Direction No. 101 for PUCC-linked fuel dispensing from October 2026. The policy can materially change fleet costs, fuel demand mix, and last-mile logistics planning.
