A rejected claim is the moment insurance is supposed to work and doesn't. The frustrating part is that most rejections are avoidable — they come down to a handful of well-known reasons, almost all of which you can sidestep if you know them in advance. Here are the eight that account for the vast majority of denied car claims in India, and exactly what to do if you believe your claim was rejected unfairly.
The 8 reasons claims actually get rejected
- The policy had lapsed. Even a one-day gap means you were uninsured at the time of the accident. Renew on or before the due date, every time.
- Driving without a valid licence (or with a licence for the wrong vehicle class). The driver at the time of the incident must be legally licensed.
- Drunk / intoxicated driving. An almost universal exclusion — a positive test at the time of the accident voids the claim.
- Engine damage from driving through flood water. This is the classic one. Restarting or driving a car in waterlogging causes hydrostatic lock, which standard own-damage cover excludes. You need an Engine Protection add-on. Example: a driver in a flooded underpass restarts the stalled car, bends a connecting rod, and faces a ₹1.2 lakh engine bill — denied, because there was no engine add-on.
- Using a private car commercially. Running your personal car as a taxi/for hire breaches the policy's declared use.
- Late intimation. Reporting the accident days later (after evidence is gone) is a common ground for rejection. Inform the insurer immediately — ideally within 24–48 hours.
- Repairing before the survey. If you fix the car before the surveyor inspects it, the insurer can't verify the loss and may reject it.
- Non-disclosure or misrepresentation. Wrong details at purchase (previous claims, modifications, actual usage) can void a claim later.
If your claim is wrongly rejected — the escalation path
Not every rejection is fair. If you have a genuine case:
- Get the rejection in writing with the specific clause cited.
- Reply with evidence — photos, FIR, repair estimates, timeline — to the insurer's grievance cell.
- Escalate to the Insurance Ombudsman (a free, IRDAI-backed body) if the insurer doesn't resolve it fairly. Most policyholders don't know this exists — it settles a large share of disputes in the customer's favour.
How to make sure your next claim sails through
- Keep the policy active — set a renewal reminder.
- Match your add-ons to your risk: an Engine Protection rider if you live anywhere prone to waterlogging (see our zero-dep vs regular guide for which add-ons are worth it).
- Intimate first, repair later — always after the survey.
- Be honest at purchase and at claim.
