Delhi to Manali is the classic Himalayan road trip — snow, cafes, the Beas roaring alongside the highway, and now the year-round Atal Tunnel opening up Lahaul beyond. The good news for 2026: the Kiratpur–Manali four-lane, with its new tunnels, has knocked hours off the old grind. The catch: this is still a long night-or-early drive with a serious monsoon caveat, and how you time it decides whether it's magical or miserable.
This guide uses Fuelprice's own route data, cross-checked with 2026 driving reports. Start with the live New Delhi → Manali toll and fuel estimate.

| Estimated fuel (one-way) | ~₹2,900 (petrol car) |

Best Time to Make the Trip
- October–November & March–June: the reliable window. Clear roads, open attractions, pleasant valley weather. Peak season (May–June) is crowded and pricey — book ahead.
- December–February (snow): Manali, Solang and the Atal Tunnel mouth get snow — the big winter draw. Roads to Solang and beyond can close temporarily after heavy snow; carry warm gear and be flexible.
- July–September (monsoon): the honest warning. The Mandi–Pandoh stretch along the Beas gorge is landslide-prone and was badly hit in recent years. Lush, but risky — check road status before you commit, and don't drive that section in heavy rain or at night.
When and How to Drive It
Two sensible strategies:
- Overnight drive (popular): leave Delhi around 10 PM–midnight, cross the plains (Panipat–Ambala–Chandigarh) while trucks are lighter, and reach the hills by morning. You gain a day but arrive tired — plan a relaxed first day.
- Early-morning drive: leave by 5 AM, break for meals, and reach by evening. Safer for sleep, but you'll hit more daytime traffic.
Either way, avoid driving the winding hill section (Mandi–Kullu–Manali) after dark if you can, especially in your first Himalayan drive.
Recommended Route
Delhi → Panipat → Ambala → Chandigarh → Kiratpur → Bilaspur → Sundernagar → Mandi → Pandoh → Aut → Kullu → Manali. The new Kiratpur–Manali four-lane with its tunnels has smoothed and shortened the hilly middle section considerably. The plains are expressway/NH; the fun (and the care) begins after Bilaspur.
Where to Eat Along the Route
The Chandigarh–Ambala belt has excellent, famous highway dhabas (the Murthal-style paratha culture continues up to Ambala; Sundernagar and Mandi have good options in the hills). Fuel up before the hill section — pumps thin out as you climb. Carry water and snacks for the winding stretch where kids can get carsick.
Places You Definitely Should Visit
Atal Tunnel & Sissu (Lahaul)
Why: the 9+ km engineering marvel that opens the stark, beautiful Lahaul valley year-round. Drive through to Sissu for waterfalls, a lake and dramatic scenery — a highlight the older Rohtang route couldn't offer in winter.
Time: a half to full day from Manali.
Practical: the tunnel is open all year, but the roads around it can close after snow — check conditions.
Solang Valley
Why: ~14 km from Manali, the adventure hub — paragliding, zorbing, cable car, and snow play in winter.
Time: half a day.
Practical: touristy and can be crowded; agree on activity prices upfront.
Hadimba Temple & Old Manali
Why: the atmospheric cedar-forest temple, plus Old Manali's cafe-and-riverside charm — the soul of a Manali evening.
Time: a relaxed half-day.
Rohtang Pass (seasonal, permit)
Why: the high pass with glaciers and snowfields, open roughly May–October. Since the Atal Tunnel bypasses it, Rohtang is now an experience in itself rather than a through-route.
Practical: requires an online permit; closed on the weekly maintenance day — plan ahead.
Where to Stay — Pick Your Area
- Old Manali: cafes, backpacker energy, riverside — best for young travellers and couples.
- Mall Road / New Manali: central, convenient, more hotels and restaurants — good for families and first-timers.
- Aleo / Prini / Naggar side: quieter, scenic stays a little out of the bustle — good for a peaceful base with a car.
- Sissu (Lahaul): an offbeat overnight beyond the tunnel for the adventurous.
Confirm current availability and reviews on a live booking source; peak-season prices swing a lot.
What to Eat
Manali's food is cosmopolitan: Old Manali cafes for wood-fired pizzas, Israeli platters and river views; local Himachali dham (a traditional festive thali) where you can find it; and hearty trout, momos and thukpa. Mall Road has the busier, more standard restaurants.
Travelling With Family or Elderly
- The winding hill roads cause motion sickness — carry medication and take breaks.
- High-altitude spots (Rohtang, upper Solang) can affect elders and very young children; ascend gradually and keep the first day light.
- Snow activities are fun but slippery — rent proper gum-boots and jackets available locally.
Road Trip Budget (indicative, car, two people, round trip)
| Fuel (round trip) | ~₹5,800 |
| Toll (round trip) | ~₹2,450 |
| Stay (3–4 nights) | ₹2,000–6,000+/night by season and area |
| Activities (Solang, Atal, permits) | ₹2,000–5,000 |

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Driving the Mandi–Pandoh gorge in heavy monsoon rain — the biggest safety risk on this route.
- Trying to do it as a 2-day round trip — give the valley at least 2–3 full days.
- Not booking a Rohtang permit in advance (if the pass is your plan).
- Underestimating winter road closures to Solang/Atal after snow — keep the plan flexible.
- Overpacking the itinerary — Manali rewards a slow pace.
Final Recommendation
Make this a 4–6 day trip, not a heroic weekend. Drive overnight or leave at dawn, take the first day easy in Old Manali, then give full days to Solang and the Atal Tunnel–Sissu run (the standout now). Add Rohtang only in season and with a permit. Come in Oct–Nov for clear crowds-lite beauty or Dec–Feb for snow — and treat the monsoon with real caution on the gorge section. Plan the full route and stops here.
